Bahmni was started in 2013 by Thoughtworks with hospitals in rural India and is built on top of OpenMRS. Today it is stewarded by the Bahmni Coalition, a group of implementers, funders and technology partners that sets the roadmap and coordinates releases. It is released under the AGPLv3 licence and is used in hundreds of facilities in more than 50 countries.
- In Ozone, Bahmni is an alternative EMR interface to OpenMRS 3; choose one EMR front end per deployment.
- Bahmni runs on the OpenMRS 2.x platform with Bahmni-specific modules, so it needs its own OpenMRS configuration (forms, concepts, dashboards) separate from an OpenMRS 3 setup.
- Bahmni's own bundled ERP and lab components are replaced by Ozone's integrations (Odoo, SENAITE, Orthanc); do not run both side by side.
- The Bahmni web UI is an older AngularJS application; customisations follow Bahmni's config conventions, not O3 microfrontends.
- Plan for the extra Bahmni services (web, reports, appointments) and their memory on top of the OpenMRS database.
