OpenELIS Global
An open-source, enterprise-grade LIMS designed for public health and clinical laboratories. OpenELIS Global enhances laboratory workflows by automating sample tracking, result validation, and seamless data exchange with health information systems.
- Full laboratory information system designed for public-health and clinical labs
- Electronic lab orders received from OpenMRS, with results returned to the patient chart
- Sample reception, labelling with barcodes and chain-of-custody tracking
- Result entry, technical and biological validation workflows
- Analyser interfacing for automated result capture
- Quality management: QC tracking, non-conformity reporting and audit trail
- Test catalogue management with LOINC coding
- Reports for patients, providers and national programmes (e.g. HIV viral load, TB)
- Multilingual interface, built for low-resource settings
- Standards-based exchange using HL7 FHIR
OpenELIS Global is developed by the Digital Initiatives Group at I-TECH (DIGI), part of the University of Washington, with long-term support from the US CDC and PEPFAR. It grew out of national laboratory deployments in countries such as Haiti and Côte d'Ivoire and is now used across Africa, Asia and the Caribbean. The software is open source under the Mozilla Public License 2.0, with an active community and public roadmap.
- Ozone integrates OpenELIS Global with OpenMRS through its integration layer, using FHIR resources for orders (ServiceRequest) and results (DiagnosticReport, Observation).
- Lab tests must be mapped between the OpenMRS concept dictionary and the OpenELIS test catalogue; unmapped tests will not flow.
- Runs on Java with its own PostgreSQL database and an internal FHIR server; budget memory for both.
- OpenELIS Global and SENAITE are alternative lab options; choose one per facility rather than running both.
- Analyser interfaces need serial-to-network bridges or ASTM/HL7 middleware at the lab bench.
