Superset
An open-source data exploration and visualization platform that enables users to create interactive dashboards and perform in-depth data analysis.
- Interactive dashboards built from a no-code chart builder
- 40+ chart types, including maps, pivot tables, time series and heatmaps
- SQL Lab for analysts to write, save and share queries
- Cross-filtering and drill-down across charts in a dashboard
- Scheduled email and Slack reports and threshold alerts
- Row-level security and role-based access to datasets and dashboards
- Semantic layer of reusable datasets, metrics and calculated columns
- Connects to most SQL databases (PostgreSQL, MySQL, ClickHouse, Druid and more)
- Sample Ozone dashboards provided as a starting point
Superset was created at Airbnb in 2015 and donated to the Apache Software Foundation, where it became a top-level project in 2021. It is developed by a global community of contributors under the Apache 2.0 licence, following the ASF's open, consensus-based governance. Preset, founded by Superset's creator, is the largest corporate contributor and offers a managed cloud version.
- In Ozone, Superset runs with Ozone Analytics, which streams and flattens data from OpenMRS and other apps into an analytics database; Superset reads that database, never the live clinical databases.
- Dashboards are only as current as the analytics pipeline; monitor it so reports do not silently go stale.
- Requires its own metadata database, Redis, and a Celery worker for reports, alerts and async queries.
- Sign-in goes through Keycloak (OIDC); Superset roles are updated from Keycloak at each login, so manage access in Keycloak, not in Superset.
- The Superset client can be enabled or disabled in Ozone configuration.
- Analytics tables contain patient-level data: apply row-level security or aggregated datasets before giving wide access.
- Dashboards and datasets can be exported and versioned as configuration so they move between environments.
